Introduction to the Global Energy Prize:
‘The Global Energy Prize is a prestigious international scientific and technological award in the field of energy, established by The Global Energy Association in 2002, with only two to three winners each year. ‘The Global Energy Prize aims to recognize winners who have made outstanding contributions to scientific and technological research and development in the field of energy, with particular emphasis on their substantial and outstanding contributions to international cooperation, public service and enterprise establishment for global energy security and conservation, in order to promote the sustainable development of human civilization. The Award Committee is composed of members from 13 countries, including the United States, Russia, Switzerland, Singapore, Japan, and South Korea, and is chaired by Rae Kwon Chung, the 2007 Nobel Peace Prize laureate.
Detailed reasons for the award and personal contributions:
Minggao Ouyang was born in 1958 in Tianmen, Hubei Province, China. he received his PhD degree from the Department of Energy Engineering, Technical University of Denmark in 1993, and is now a professor at Tsinghua University, a Cheung Kong Scholar, an expert in new energy power systems and electrification of transport, and an academician of the Chinese Academy of Sciences. He is an outstanding scientist in the field of electric vehicles, lithium-ion batteries and hydrogen fuel cells worldwide.
(1)Played a leading role in technology for China's international leadership in new energy vehicles: from 2007 to 2021, he served as the chief expert/head of the overall expert group of the National Science and Technology Special Project on New Energy Vehicles, proposed a technology roadmap for new energy vehicles centred on purely electric vehicles, led the planning and implementation of related research and development projects, and technically coordinated the world's first science and technology demonstration project for new energy vehicles --From 2010 to 2017, he was the Chief Scientist of the China-US Clean Energy Vehicle Alliance, leading a large-scale international collaborative research project on electric vehicles between the Chinese and US governments. 2014, he co-initiated the establishment of the China Electric Vehicle Association, which has become the most important organisation in China to promote the development of the electric vehicle industry. become the most influential organisation to promote the development of electric vehicle industry in China. He served as the Chair of the Programme Committee of the World Electric Vehicle Conference (EVS) in 2010 (EVS-25) and 2021 (EVS-34), and has been the founding Chair of the Science and Technology Committee of the World Congress on New Energy Vehicles (WCNEV) since 2018.
(2)Leading the R&D technology of fuel cell power systems for commercial vehicles:
He led the revelation of the degradation mechanism of proton exchange membrane fuel cells for vehicles and invented a new fuel cell/battery hybrid power system with improved durability. He led the development of proton exchange membrane fuel cell engine and its large-scale application to commercial vehicles, which propelled China to a world-leading position in the commercialization of fuel cell commercial vehicles. He led the development of a new generation of intelligent plug-in square electrolytic hydrogen generation system and its composite diaphragm technology. His team led the Ministry of Science and Technology of China's 2022 Winter Olympics ‘Hydrogen Mobility’ demonstration project, and participated in the creation of the world's largest hydrogen demonstration project, which includes 10 hydrogen production bases, 30 hydrogen refueling stations and more than 1,000 fuel cell vehicles. Cultivated Yihuatong, the only listed company in China's hydrogen fuel cell industry so far in terms of science and innovation. Received the IPHE Technical Achievement Award from the International Union of Hydrogen Energy and Fuel Cells in 2010. He has been the first chairman of the International Hydrogen and Fuel Cell Association IHFCA since 2023.
(3)Pioneered automotive power battery safety research: In 2010, he established the world's first automotive power battery safety laboratory. He revealed the complete mechanism of thermal runaway in high nickel ternary batteries, and developed a high safety battery of 360Wh/kg by combining the new EC-free electrolyte and in-situ polymerization method. His team provided technical solutions for the EVS-GTR international battery safety regulations, developed a gas-solid two-phase flow model for battery heat spreading, invented a complete set of thermal-gas-electrical safety design techniques for battery systems, and achieved the suppression of fires in battery systems for electric vehicles. He led the construction of the first early warning system for battery failures based on AI large model in the battery field, and invented smart batteries with flexible smart membrane electrodes, smart end caps and wireless battery management system. These technologies are widely used in the electric vehicle and power battery industries, including Ningde Times, BYD, BMW, and Nissan. His achievements have earned him the 2022 IEEE Transportation Technology Award, and he was named one of the top 10 researchers in the world in the field of lithium batteries by Research Interfaces in the same year. 2024, he initiated the establishment of the China All-Solid-State Battery Industry-University-Research Collaborative Innovation Platform, which is dedicated to the research and development of next-generation high-safety batteries.
(4)Innovative technology development for electric vehicle energy replenishment and vehicle-grid interaction: He initiated the establishment of the China Electric Heavy Duty Truck Power-Changing Industry Promotion Alliance. He led the research and development of power exchange system, guided the formulation of national and industrial standards for power exchange heavy trucks, and cultivated Zhilithium IOT, a leading enterprise in the field of power exchange for domestic heavy trucks. He established the world's first integrated energy replenishment demonstration station integrating fast power exchange for trucks, fast charging for cars, photovoltaic power generation as well as battery energy storage. He initiated the establishment of the China Greater Bay Area Vehicle-Network Interaction Alliance, which led the development of vehicle-network interaction technologies, especially leading the development of a series of original technologies, including the bi-directional pulse-based battery safety and durability control algorithms, low-temperature heating algorithms, and precipitation-free lithium super-fast charging algorithms, which have been successfully carried out in a number of demonstration projects across the country.
