In September 2023, Associate Professor Nie Bingbing from the School of Vehicle and Mobility was elected as a board member of the International Research Council on Biomechanics of Injury (IRCOBI). On January 11-12, 2024, Nie Bingbing attended the biannual board meeting in Munich, Germany, officially assuming the position. Additionally, she joined the society's Editorial Committee and Asia Committee.
IRCOBI was established in 1971, is an authoritative academic organization in the field of automotive safety and human injury biomechanics research. It is dedicated to advancing the study of injury mechanisms and the development of protective systems, enjoying a prestigious academic reputation and significant global influence. Since 1973, IRCOBI has held its annual scientific conference in Europe. Starting in 2018, it began hosting Asian regional conferences in various Asian countries, with all conference papers indexed in the EI database. In 2021, Tsinghua University's Automotive Safety and Lightweight Design Team organized and hosted the IRCOBI Asia Conference, marking the first time the event was held in China. In 2023, the IRCOBI annual conference was held at the University of Cambridge in the United Kingdom, with seven faculty members and students from Tsinghua's Automotive Safety and Lightweight Design Team participating. The 2024 annual conference will be held in Stockholm, Sweden (http://ircobi.org/wordpress/).
IRCOBI board members consist of leading scholars in the field of human injury biomechanics worldwide. They are selected through a nomination and rigorous voting process, with each term lasting five years and no member serving more than two consecutive terms. Currently, there are 23 members. Many renowned scholars in this field have served as board members, including Bertil Aldman (inventor of the rear-facing child seat), Elaine Mackay (developer of the AIS 1980-1998 editions, the most widely used injury severity classification standard in trauma, and former Executive Director of the Association for the Advancement of Automotive Medicine in the U.S.), King Yang (Fellow of the American Institute for Medical and Biological Engineering), Jeff Crandall (Honorary Professor at the University of Virginia, SAE Fellow, and AAAM Fellow), Dominique Cesari (former Chair of the European Enhanced Vehicle-safety Committee, EEVC), and Michiel Van Ratingen (Secretary General of Euro NCAP), among others. Since its establishment, Nie Bingbing has become the second scholar from China to serve as a board member and the first female scholar from Asia to hold this position.
