Graduate Program

Graduate education in the School of Vehicle and Mobility, guided by the aim of training “research and practice talents with an international vision”, pays attention to the individualized training, offers opportunities for students to participate in national and world-class high-level research projects, builds international joint research and talent training platforms, and cultivates versatile advanced talents of engineering and management with unique academic personality and innovative ability in automobile technology and engineering and related high-tech fields.

The school has presently 469 graduate students, including 194 master students and 275 doctoral students. Our current 11 training schemes are applied to the training of various graduate programs. All graduate students are awarded degrees of two first-class academic disciplines, namely “Mechanical Engineering” and “Power Engineering and Engineering Thermophysics”, and the sub-disciplines are all national key disciplines. To speed up the training of high-level applied professionals, two full-time professional degree programs, “Intelligent Vehicles” and “Clean Power for Vehicles” were launched in 2016, students of the Master of Engineering Management (MEM) was recruited in 2017, and innovative leading engineering doctoral candidates were recruited in 2018. The newly added professional degree programs have not only improved the talent training system, but also met the diverse needs of society for automotive talents. The School of Vehicle and Mobility now has 68 graduate supervisors (including 52 doctoral supervisors), offering 36 specialized postgraduate courses, 13 of which are taught in English. In addition, famous scholars and business experts from overseas are invited every year to offer “Short-term Lecture Courses by Overseas Experts” for graduate students.

The School of Vehicle and Mobility, which conducts cutting-edge basic research around the three major themes of automobile “safety, energy conservation and environmental protection” and leads the development of new energy vehicles and intelligent vehicles in China, is an important think tank for formulating the development strategy of China’s automobile industry. To encourage graduate students to participate in frontier research and inspire innovation, not only research funding support but also superior experimental conditions are provided for graduate students.

Every year, many graduate students publish high-level research papers in authoritative international journals and receive international academic awards. “Modeling of Ducted-Fan and Motor in an Electric Aircraft and a Preliminary Integrated Design”, a paper by Jin Yuzhi, a doctoral student, and three other members of the program, won the SAE Wright Brothers Medal in 2019, the first time for Chinese mainland scholars to win this honor since the award was founded in 1924. “Traffic Signal Detection Based on Genetic Optimization and Deep Learning”, a paper written by doctoral student Xiong Hui, won the “Excellent Paper of the Year 2019” of Automotive Engineering.

“Real-Time Estimation of Tire-Road Friction Coefficient Based on Unscented Kalman Filtering”, a paper published by Lin Xuewu, a master student, won the Best Student Paper Award of the 5th IEEE International Conference on Intelligent Transportation Engineering (IEEE ICITE2020). “Mixed Reinforcement Learning for Efficient Policy Optimization in Stochastic Environments”, a paper published by master students Mu Yao, Peng Boyu et al, won the “Best Student Paper Award” at the 20th International Conference on Control Automation and Systems (ICCAS 2020). “Learn Collision-Free Self-Driving Skills at Urban Intersections with Model-Based Reinforcement Learning”,  a paper published by doctoral students Guan Yang and Ren Yangang, won the “Best Student Paper Award” at the 24th IEEE International Intelligent Transportation System Conference (IEEE ITSC 2021).

Every year, many graduates are awarded excellent dissertation awards at the university level. In 2018, a total of 7 doctoral students of the school won the Excellent Doctoral Dissertation Award from the China Society of Automotive Engineers and the Chinese Society for Internal Combustion Engines, accounting for nearly 30% of the award winners, far ahead of other universities in China. Among them, Fang Chuan, Liu Hui and Lv Chen won the Excellent Doctoral Dissertation Award of the China Society of Automotive Engineers; Chen Hongxu, Chen Long and Song Zi won the nomination award for excellent doctoral dissertation of the China Society of Automotive Engineers; Liu Haoye won the second prize of the Excellent Doctoral Dissertation Award of the Chinese Society for Internal Combustion Engines. In the recent five years, four graduate students have won the “Top Grade Scholarship for Postgraduates”, and the number of winners is leading in the whole university.

To promote the sustained and healthy development of graduate education, our school has coordinated resources and established a complete graduate scholarship and financial support system. Through a series of graduate scholarship and financial support policies and measures, such as “teaching assistant, management assistance and research assistance”, the school offers competitive aid, award excellent students and help graduate students successfully complete their studies.
