Although the School of Vehicle and Mobility (SVM) of Tsinghua University has been in existence since 2019, its lineage can be traced back to the university’s effort to establish the Department of Automotive Engineering in 1980, which is one of China’s earliest academic departments for training automotive engineers. The SVM prides itself on the fact that it is the only institution of higher education in China that has two national key disciplines: "Vehicle Engineering" and "Power Machinery and Engineering". The four research institutes of the school promote and organize interdisciplinary and specialized research activities in different fields of automobile research, such as power and smart mobility , vehicle engineering and intelligent safety, intelligent vehicles and smart mobility, and special vehicles and power engineering, bringing cutting-edge research from around the world into China and playing a pivotal role in making the country’s vehicles low-carbon, electric, intelligent, and networked. The SVM stays research-oriented and open- and globally-minded when training its students, equipping them with the knowledge and skills they will need in international academic competitions and helping them take leading roles in their future technology or management careers.
